Legacy giving and the Foundling

It is easy to leave a legacy to the Foundling Museum, either a specific monetary gift, the residue of an estate or
a piece of art. If you are thinking of remembering the Foundling in your will, this page will provide a brief introduction for you.

So, what are legacies?
A legacy is a simple and flexible way of giving, and can also provide valuable tax benefits for donors.

An unrestricted legacy would allow the museum the greatest flexibility to use your gift effectively, enabling us to support areas of greatest need, now and in the future.

There are a various types of legacy you may wish to consider, including:

Pecuniary Legacy: a gift of a specified sum of money. If you are thinking of making this type of gift you may choose to link it to the Retail Price Index. Based on the Retail Price Index a gift of £1,000 written into a Will in 1980 would have been worth ca. £300 by 2008.

Residuary Legacy: a gift of all or the remainder of your estate after all other payments and legacies have been made. The value of a residuary legacy will grow in line with inflation.

Specific or Non-Monetary Legacy: a gift of an asset such as property, shares or works of art. If you are considering leaving works of art for the Collection, do speak to the Director, Lars Tharp.

Inheritance Tax
A legacy to a charity may reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax due. Inheritance Tax is currently fixed at a flat rate of 40%. Your estate may be subject to Inheritance Tax if the value of your property and possessions come to more than £312,000. This excludes any money or property you leave to your spouse if he or she lives in the United Kingdom. It also excludes any legacies to charity. Your solicitor will advise you about current tax legislation. You will also find more information in our brief guide.

Should you have decided to leave us something in your Will,
please let us know by contacting us on development@foundlingmuseum.org.uk.
We guarantee that all information will be treated in the strictest confidence, and does not involve you in any binding commitment.
