London Community Baroque Orchestra

Now in its third term, London Community Baroque Orchestra is quickly emerging as one of London’s leading music education initiatives.  Founded and directed by Dr Zak Ozmo as a  partnership between L’Avventura London and the Foundling Museum, the orchestra provides training in historical performance practice to its members (including regular rehearsals, coaching, workshops, and lectures on various relevant topics) and presents high-level musical performances.

LCBO offers a fun and educational environment in which participants can explore Baroque music along with other interested musicians, and work on musical repertoire consisting of both much-loved masterpieces and new discoveries (including those contained in the Foundling Museum's Gerald Coke Handel Collection).

The orchestra is coached and musically supported by members of period-instrument ensemble L’Avventura London, in addition to other prominent guest artists.  LCBO membership is open to amateur adult musicians Grade 5 and above, students, and young professionals pending an audition.  Rehearsals are held on Saturdays, in the Picture Gallery, 10.30am-1.30 pm. ‘Modern’ instruments are welcome, and we tune to Baroque pitch A= 415.

Membership fee: £50 per term

L’Avventura London

Ensemble in Association

L'Avventura London is a period-instrument ensemble dedicated to the exploration of Western musical repertoire from the sixteenth through eighteenth centuries. Through a combination of brilliant virtuosity, passion, unbridled dramaticism, and an extensive knowledge of historical performance practice and its repertoire, L’Avventura London seeks to bring the joy of a new musical adventure to its rapidly growing audiences. Testifying to the ensemble’s rapid rise, L’Avventura’s performances have been featured on BBC Radio 3, German KulturRadio and MDR Figaro, Austrian ORF Radio Ö1, and Belgium Radio Klara, among others; the press has praised the group for its "excellent musicianship" (Gramophone) and described its performances as "engaging, entertaining…an enormous amount of atmosphere and character" (Opera News). The majority of L’Avventura’s concert programmes are based on original research and regularly include modern debuts of forgotten musical treasures, along with fresh takes on more familiar and much-loved masterpieces.

L’Avventura London is ideally placed to augment the musical activities of the Foundling Museum, which has been an important London concert venue since the Foundling Hospital opened in the eighteenth century. The ensemble presents a minimum of two musical performances per year, in addition to organising open lectures and workshops in historical performance practice and supporting the London Community Baroque Orchestra.
