Handel at the Playhouse

George Frideric Handel was undeniably the most popular composer of Italian opera in 18th century England, and he had the patronage of kings and aristocrats to prove it. Few people realise today that the middle and lower classes also frequently heard and enjoyed Handel’s Italian tunes, as they were regularly appropriated and recontextualised in a native English style for musical comedies in the lowly fairs and playhouses.  Many of these charming and lively musical adaptations survive, but have not yet been heard by modern audiences. Dr Zak Ozmo leads Earl’s Court Baroque in a performance of these fascinating 18th century English versions of Handel’s most popular Italian pieces, including arias and instrumental works from ‘Poro’, ‘Scipione’, and ‘Floridante’, among others.
